All about collagen

I was first introduced to Collagen when I first started my Whole30 journey in 2016. It wasn’t until March of last year that I decided to give them a try myself.

Within my first month of using them I noticed tremendous changes and haven’t turned back since.

Here is some collagen 101

– Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body but as we get older we stop producing it as much so it’s helpful to take a supplement

– It’s beneficial for joint health, skin, hair and nails, digestion and more

– Different forms such as grass-fed, pasture raised bovine hide collagen sourced from Brazil and New Zealand (what I use) or marine collagen obtained from fish sourced from Hawaii!

Why I take collagen

So here’s the deal. I’ve had 3 back surgeries and the joints of a person in their seventies (this is a direct quote from my orthopedic surgeon by the way). After my 3rd and most invasive surgery my surgical team, PT and family were all under the impression that I would need the rest of the janky disks fused as the level 1 fusion was only meant to take away the numbness in my legs and tingly toes.

I was determined with my new Whole30 lifestyle which included more than just food freedom but an exercise regiment and appropriate nutritional supplements that I was going to prolong this surgery a long as I possibly could.

So here I am, standing tall (for real, half an inch taller since my surgery), surgery free since June 2016.

I have been taking Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides every day since early 2017 and y’all, I’m never turning back.

I’ve noticed vast improvement in my workout performance with less joint pain and increased endurance. I notice I take less ibuprofen surrounding exercise and this was my goal- ACHIEVED.

But, I have also noticed I use less concealer under my eyes because it has helped improve my skin making it all glowy, and it improves my quality of sleep at night.

My nails become less brittle by the month and my hair is stronger than ever.

Vital Protiens Collagen is bioavailable so it’s absorbed by the body super quickly and it’s totally tasteless and odorless.

How Do I Use It?

For me personally, I put a heaping scoop in my morning coffee and 1 heaping scoop in my nighttime tea.

You can use it in cold or hot liquids–even smoothies! I’ve used it in baking healthier treats (post Whole30) for extra protein and I’ve even added it to mashed potatoes!

Your options are endless when it comes to Vital Proteins. They have brand new collagen COFFEE CREAMERS that are Whole30 Approved, a Matcha Collagen for you non-coffee drinkers out there, flavored peptides, collagen beauty water mixed with probiotics to enhance hydration.. and so many more!

I have no doubt that there is a collagen waiting just for you! Check out their website for all their Whole30 approved options.

Be sure to enter the giveaway on my Instagram page (@coffeecarrotsandcurls) ending Friday 1.26.18 to win a 20 ounce bottle of the collagen I have been using for the last year!
